Babu Ram Pariyar

Babu Ram Pariyar

Caste: As Kamal, he is a Pariyar, literally meaning ‘tailoring master’. Babu Ram explained that his grandfather’s generation used to be a Koirala caste. Koirala is predominantly a Brahmin caste and as all Koiralas share the same forefather, a Koirala can’t marry with another. His grandfather changed his caste to a Pariyar, which was a much discriminated caste at the time but they used to receive (even still today) advantages from the government such as a 50% financial support for the education of all Pariyar children. Amongst his five brothers, one brother chose to become a Koirala, two stayed Pariyar and one became Damai (same like Pariyar).

Status: Babu Ram is married and is the proud father of 5 daughters and 1 son. He admits that having so many children was not part of his initial plan, but his wife greatly wished for a son, which is why the family started growing

Hobby: He likes listening to old Nepali folk songs and regularly makes garments at home for friends or family

Education : He went to school till he was 15 and then started helping his father at home, who had a small stitching atelier. His father is even still stitching occasionally despite his 77 years of age.

Career : After learning his skills from his father, he worked as a patternmaster in a Nepali fashion boutique for 15 years. Since four months he is working as a JUX stitcher and occasional pattern maker.

Background: Babu Ram is the only employee at Studio JUX who is originally from Kathmandu. He still lives in the same area like where he grew up in the outskirts of Kathmandu valley in Balaju, which lies at the foot of the Nagarjun hill.

Favorite clothing: Babu Ram enjoys easy clothing which doesn’t have to be ironed. Most of all he likes to wear T-shirt’s and jeans, even though his wife doesn’t like him wearing jeans as they are hard to wash.
